Virtual Communities: Good, Bad and the Ugly

Posted by lizzybee1002 on September 25, 2007

I am a lurker, I admit that I normally lurk and read for weeks or sometimes months on end before I join a community online and then I normally post comments and ideas seldom.

I can use the excuse that I’m too busy to really be active or it can really go back to the first time that I ever posted on a virtual community site (I will not post the name out of principle) but I will say it is dedicated to television and it is very popular. I was young, probably 17 and wanted to join the online world quickly since I loved TV and the shows that I wanted to comment on. So I did and felt nervous and proud all at the same time. Within 5 hours my post was under fire and I was kicked off the board for posting incorrectly (whatever the heck that meant: grammar, punctuation, blah, blah, blah, they never seemed to mention).

End my online posting career, in only a matter of hours! I thought I would never post again until I found some great small sites (years later of course) that weren’t so rigid with their posting “rules” and was a site of dedicated fans that may take their show and hobbies and interests but posting and joining was fun again. I wanted to be come active and post my thoughts and findings. I am so glad I was able to find a site (sites) that makes me feel like I belong.

It’s the End of the World

Posted by lizzybee1002 on September 19, 2007

When reading the Brown and Duguid article, who knew that with all of the technology out there we were at the end of the world. (Insert hysterical scream here). Have no fear though the “end” as Brown and Duguid is the end politics…and universities, cities, religions, television and mass media, along with a slew of other institutions that we need. Or do we really need them?

Do we really need to go into a classroom when we can easily be taught online and through applications like Second Life? Do we really need to watch the presidential debate on TV when youtube can air just the important parts”?

Is it really the end to all of the things we know and are familiar with or is the information age just enhancing our world. We are being connected to the world without ever leaving out homes and making friends virtually through the internet and social networking sites. But will there ever come a time where we will see the end to government, or cities because it will be online and there is no need to see anyone ever again.

I am going to go out on a limb and say no, the internet and the information age and all of the advancements really are just to enhance our world and not take it over. At least I hope not because I think robots shouldn’t be in charge. 😉

I am Up and Away!

Posted by lizzybee1002 on September 12, 2007

Hi Everyone! My name is Liz (LizzyBee: when I was young, hence the title of the blog.)
I am really excited about taking LIS 768 and really want to use the experiences from this class to make myself more marketable for a “real” job in the “real” world.
I have a love of a variety of things and to name a few, video games, comic books, TV (The Office, Heroes, Lost, to name a few). Of course, I have a love for books and technology, I picked up a MAC, not to long ago, and though I do love the classic PC, I think I am converting to the MAC! 😉
